Our sound this week was the sound oi (sounds like "wa" in English). Students found words in the classroom containing the sound, and we practiced using those words to make sentences. We learned lots of question vocabulary, and practiced making sentences and asking them to our friends.
In math we practiced measuring objects in the classroom using non-standard units (cubes, linking chains, pencils, our footprints, etc.). We compared objects to see which was longer or shorter. We learned that just because the number of objects used to measure something might change (i.e. it might take more cubes than linking chains to measure the length of my desk), doesn't mean that the length of the object has changed. When we use a smaller unit of measure, we have to use more of that unit.
In math we began to learn about structures, and we sorted structures that are manmade and those that are naturally occurring. We read a book about Inukshuks, and practiced making inukshuks using different materials and blocks in the classroom. We talked about what helps our inukshuk to stay upright. We also began a beautiful watercolour painting of an arctic landscape and will be adding an inukshuk once it is dry.
The outdoor carnival that was scheduled for Friday afternoon was postponed until next Tuesday due to all the water that accumulated and then froze overnight. Our inukshuk building activity will also be next Tuesday. Please prepare ice over the weekend, and send in with your child on Tuesday morning. Make sure to dress for outdoors on Tuesday.
SLPS was very fortunate to receive an Outdoor Education grant this year! All primary students will be snowshoeing next week. Our snowshoeing day will be Wednesday, March 2nd.
Important dates/times for next week:
Monday: Class Pet Presentation - Lilian; Library Day
Tuesday: Show and Tell - Max; Inukshuk Challenge; Winter Carnival
Wednesday: Snowshoeing
Thursday: Show and Tell - Taea
Friday: Class Pet Presentation - Benyang; Skating 11:25-12:25
