In French this week we began to learn about the elements of a story. We identified the main character, setting, problem and solution in stories that we read, and we started to plan our own story. Our sound this week was the sound "eu", and we practiced using meaning clues from a sentence to determine which word should complete the sentence.
In math we continued to learn about money. Students should now be comfortable counting various arrangements of coins, and making a given value up to 20 cents. You may want to practice this at home by having your child count the change in your pocket at the end of the day or playing store or restaurant and having your child buy or sell small items. We have prepared items for a class store, and will take turns buying and selling items next week.
On Thursday we had another visit from the Inuit centre, and students learned three different Inuit games to have fun, get stronger and practice hunting skills.
This afternoon students took part in the annual Walk for Water. We used the walk to think about what it must be like for people who must walk great distances every day in order to collect water.
I have noticed that many students in the class are having trouble considering others in their day-to-day interactions, so we have been talking a lot about why this is important. We have been reading stories about being kind to others, or putting others' needs or wants before our own. We have tried to identify ways that we can show we are thinking of others (holding the door for others, letting others go ahead in line, taking turns and letting someone else go first, sharing, picking up a mess that isn't ours, etc.), and I will be encouraging students to demonstrate these and similar behaviour in the classroom and around the school.
Important dates/times for next week:
Monday: Class pet - Kayla; Library day
Tuesday: Show and tell - Lucy
Wednesday:
Thursday: Show and tell - Carina
Friday: Class pet - Kevin
Homework for next week:
Reading: 10 minutes each night
French: Le son eu
Math: Prodigy
Have a great weekend!
