What a busy few weeks we have had since March break! Short weeks, unexpected snow days and our field trip to SugarFest have kept us on our toes but we have still managed to get in lots of good learning.
In French we learned the sound "ch" (sounds like the English sound "sh"). We have been working on writing pyramid sentences, where we add adjectives and extra details to stretch out our sentences and make our writing more interesting.
In math we have been working on addition and subtraction strategies. Most students can now use a variety of strategies to solve a problem, such as drawing a picture, counting on a number line or 100s chart, counting on their fingers (ask your child to show you how to do this properly in grade 1!).
In science we have been learning about how to make our structures stronger, and which types of materials to select. We practiced making houses of straw, sticks and bricks and then tested their strength. We learned how to enforce less sturdy materials by incorporating triangles into our design, and created bridges out of paper.
Our visit to the SugarFest was a great success! Students enjoyed checking the sap buckets in the sugar bush, tasting the maple syrup taffy, listening to traditional stories about maple syrup, visiting the reptile and bird exhibits and petting zoo, and getting some energy out on the bouncy castle. Many thanks to the parent volunteers who helped to make this day a success! We couldn't have done it without you!
