Our sound last week was the sound "in". It can also be spelled "im", "ain", "aim", "ein", and "eim". We continued to practice using adjectives and extra details to stretch our sentences out and write "Les phrases pyramides". We have added some new activities to our Oral Communication centre, and students are enjoying using the ipads to create mini cartoons in French.
In math we worked on different subtraction strategies, and recognizing whether to use addition or subtraction to solve a word problem. Students drew a picture to accompany a math story, or wrote a math story (word problem) to accompany a picture.
In Science, we have been preparing for World Water Day. We watched two videos by the Water Brothers. Students learned about all the plastic waste that is polluting the ocean, and it's affect on marine life, and they also learned about illegal shark hunting. Students worked with their grade 6 communication buddies to do some research on a marine animal of their choice, and we will use the research to create a mini book about their animal.
After learning about all the plastic waste, we began to track how much plastic waste we are generating in our class every day. We have been counting the number of items that end up in the garbage, and tracked them for a week. We were sad to learn that our class is throwing out between 38-50 pieces of plastic garbage every single day! Students brainstormed some ideas of how they could cut down on plastic waste, such as using re-usable containers instead of plastic baggies or wrap and eating more fruits and vegetables instead of pre-packaged snacks.
Students created some absolutely beautiful mixed-media artwork this week. We used watercolours to paint the sky, and mixed different shades of blue tempra paint to paint the water. Students then added an origami boat to complete their stormy scene. We have had so many compliments from other teachers and students passing by!
