I am sending this by e-mail as well as posting on the blog, as I was sick and did not get to it over the weekend.
This will be a very busy week! It is Education Week in Ontario, and here at SLPS we are celebrating with a "Love of Reading" theme. There are many activities planned for the week:
In school:
The children will also be given the opportunity to take out a book. For those children with a library card, they will need to bring their card from home. For those students who do not have one, I am sending home the registration form this afternoon. This is not a requirement, so if you choose not to request a library card (or take out a book) then that is fine too. The library card does not require a payment.
If you do wish to order a library card, please have your registration form to me by Tuesday (apologies for the short notice). This will give the library time to make up the new cards for all of the students.
Important dates (summary):
Monday: Class pet - Danica; Library Day (in school)
Tuesday: Show and tell - Aaron; Registration forms due for library card
Wednesday:
Thursday: Show and Tell - Lilian; Photos for Catch Me Reading contest due; Humane Society visit
Friday: Dress like your favourite book character; Trip to Beaverbrook Library
Homework:
Reading!!! Track your minutes on this form
Have a great week!
This will be a very busy week! It is Education Week in Ontario, and here at SLPS we are celebrating with a "Love of Reading" theme. There are many activities planned for the week:
In school:
- Catch me reading contest: please take a picture of your child reading at home in an unusual place. Print it and bring it to school by no later than Thursday May 5th. Their picture will be posted on the bulletin board and a winner will be chosen and will receive a prize! Please make sure photos are labelled with first and last name so that they can be returned.
- Teachers will be reading their favourite story during recesses.
- Classes will be working together to create a collaborative story.
- The students have written stories and will read them to students in different classes
- Friday May 6th: come dressed as your favourite character from a book!
- Students are encouraged to read a book to the class. Some students need more practice at reading a book at home, please read it a few times then encourage your child to read it to the class the following day.
- Do you have a favourite children's book? Would you like to come read it to the class? If you are interested in reading to the class (I understand if the book is not in French:), please let me know and we can find a time during the week that is convenient to you.
- On Friday May 6th all grade 1 students will visit the Beaverbrook branch of the Ottawa Public Library. We will be listening to a read aloud, as well as learning about how the library works and how it plays a role in our community. We should be back at the school by 12:30pm. I will need a few volunteers to visit the library with us. I am looking for at least 2 volunteers and will take up to 4. Please indicate on your permission form whether you would like to volunteer or not. Thank you!

- On Thursday of this week, we will have a visit from the Humane Society to learn how to be safe around dogs and other animals. A real dog will be coming into the class as part of the presentation. Please let me know if your child is afraid of dogs.
- The homework for this week is reading, please read, read, read all week and tally the minutes on the attached sheet (I am also sending home a paper copy). We will see how many minutes we can achieve this week!
